The New Hp Laptop With Linux, is it the Right Choice for You?

Author: brenda moore

In the Microsoft Windows dominated world, it is big news when a company announces that it is going to implement a Linux operating system on one of its computers. It is even more surprising that when that computer is a laptop. But that is exactly what Hewlett-Packard did with its nx5000 HP laptop.

While you may have experienced glitches on other laptops running the Linux operating system, this one passes the test with flying colors. But if you just have to have your Windows operating system, HP does allow this as an option for its nx5000.

The nx5000 model HP laptop is a medium sized computer weighing in at approximately six pounds. Some of the features that can be ordered include your choice of a Celeron up to a 2 GHz Pentium M processor, a hard drive from 30 to 60 MB, up to 2 GB of memory, Bluetooth technology, DVD ROM/ CD RW drive, WiFi access and more. You may also select a DVD burner, a more powerful battery and a SXGA+ screen.

The nx5000 comes with Novell’s SUSE Linux 9.1 installed. But one of the biggest achievements is how well the operating system is integrated with other components on this HP laptop.

Other users who have installed Linux operating systems on their computers have reported problems with wireless connectivity or other issues. This is not so with the nx5000. Everything seems to work perfectly right out of the box.

The desktop environment that is included is the KDE 3.2, which is quite attractive, efficient, and user friendly. This HP laptop also comes with the Open Office suite of software, which is comparable to Microsoft Office.

If you are comfortable using Microsoft’s software, then you will have no problem using the Open Office suite. One of the great things about Open Office software is that it is entirely compatible with the Microsoft Office suite and will save your documents in the same formats.

Hewlett Packard has even included software for watching movies also, LinDVD, so you do not have to worry about buying additional software. It also comes with Real Audio Player already installed.

HP has done an excellent job integrating the Linux operating system into its nx5000 laptop. And if you have been longing for a full featured system that rivals Windows, then you just may have found it.

If you are newcomer in articles, press release, news and blogs submission and publishing author we recommend you some guidelines to get quick start and help your web site to get more internet traffic plus improve its SEO positioning. Obviously we are not original folks who discovered some internet marketing tricks, but we are not keeping them in secret and hope you will be up to speed to the same success rate:

1. Articles Genre. Article as it forms dictates should be new knowledge, which means that if you plan to write articles you should be expert and innovator in your industry field. If this is the case, then please begin writing articles and sharing with your product consumers the new discovery about your product. Otherwise, please consider writing instead PR, news, blogs

2. News genre. News do not require you to be an expert, but rather you should have journalism basic familiarity. PR is typically about your company milestone, where you follow the PR genre rules, such as about your company, about your product, etc.

3. Microsoft Articles. If you would like to get higher scores in internet searching, such as google, yahoo, msn, altavista, you should be careful in selecting media portal where you publish your materials – this media portal should be at least technology oriented. If not – your link will be working against you and moving your web site toward alternative search engine categorizing

4. How to find tech oriented web sites. Here you obviously have to be creative, some hint could be – enter in google the keywords: “submit Microsoft article or press release”, this would give your pretty standard point to start

5. Supporting your blog with photo and video. We recommend you to do this, as you will be climbing up toward professional PR submission and will be contributing to your company in its internet lead generation more and more

6. Articles and google page rank. These two are closely related, however you should be conservative and do not expect that if you publish one hundred articles, all the sudden you will increase google page rank by one – it takes time and persistence.

Look Out for Ideal Domain Names and Linux & Windows Server Hosting Packages

Look Out for Ideal Domain Names and Linux & Windows Server Hosting Packages

Author: Joanna Gadel

Once a domain name is registered, it is hosted in the web. Not only website, but also, files and other information are supposed to be stored in the World Wide Web platform. Domain name web hosting including Linux server hosting and Windows server hosting show the prevalent issues of the web usages at a massive scale.

For the wider use of info in the web for the corporate sectors and personal sites or blogs for families or hobbies, the web hosting is termed essential with proper space and similar other feasibilities.

Therefore finding best web hosting package is a crucial task.

Cheap Domain Name Hosting

There are several cheap domain name hosting services available in the market. Those hosting packages offer all the benefits of not having those annoying ads and quite possibly, more disk space and greater monthly bandwidth. Price conscious people can even find those sites cheaper than a large pizza they spend so many times. It is, hence, very much ethical and practical to spend that much sum in order to get quality services and features. Especially the perfectionists are well aware of these paid and cheap domain name web hosting (http://www.aussiehost.com.au/) packages.

Shared Domain Name Hosting

Shared domain name hosting is what most of the website customers end up choosing at their initial stages. In this kind of set up the web hosting company, divides the master space on one of their servers and so many clients can access to share the space. The customers can shorten their costs among the shared servers and at the same time, can get all kinds of benefits at monthly payments. The pitfalls in case of the shared hosting is that if one of the sites has any problem gets hacked or takes up too many system resources -memory, CPU time, etc-then your site can be impacted as well.

Dedicated Domain Name Web Hosting

You can put a stop to your server being shared by so many inhabitants sharing your space, bandwidth or system resources and thereby the chances of being hacked can be resolved, if you opt for the dedicated server domain hosting. Two drawbacks are there: the significant high charge for booking the server and your sole control to mange your server, i.e. you cannot call and point a finger to anybody if anything goes wrong.

Free Domain Name Web Hosting

The most popular free hosting option is, you can create a single web page and you can save enough disk space on the server to store that web page and the associated files. You would also be given a certain amount of bandwidth, a measure of the amount of traffic the web site can handle. Talking about the cost issues, most of these websites usually come free of costs as part of the advertising from the web hosting company. For this you have compromise with several pop ups. If you think that this kind of free hosting option is suitable for your current situation and the intended look for the site, then you can easily opt for this.

Decision Making Process

Other than what type of the hosting services, one must be careful about what exactly is included in the price for the hosting services.

Disk Space & Bandwidth: Normally 500MB of disk space and 1GB of bandwidth will be enough for most websites. If the number is a little off from this stated figure, just do not worry. If, however, there be an abrupt low amount of disk space or bandwidth, please take away your website from one host to another, as they are really giving poor features.

Number of Email Addresses Set Up: Generally, you will be able to set up thousands, if not an unlimited amount of email addresses. So, please ask your windows server hosting (http://www.planethost.com.au/) service provider the number. It is true for the FTP accounts also.

PHP, MySQL, PERL, CGI or other features: Depending on the intended use of the site, you might require features like PHP, MySQL, PERL and CGI. Please ensure if the hosting company provides this or not. Normally the standard features of a site will include these features.

Checking out reviews of top rated web hosting companies to see how they compare with one another is another way to find your kind of web hosting company. Following these different kinds of server details, one can easily find the required cheap domain name web hosting package.

Linux/unix: Basic Ntp Configuration

Author: Richard n Williams

Network Time Protocol (NTP) is an Internet protocol used for the transfer of accurate time, providing time information so that a precise time can be obtained and maintained on a network Most UNIX and Linux operating systems provide built-in time synchronisation functionality with its NTP (Network Time Protocol) daemon. If the NTP service is not available on your version of UNIXLinux, NTP version 4 is open source and can easily be downloaded and configured, compiled and installed from www.ntp.org. Network Time Protocol is the standard service for time dissemination across TCP/IP networks. It provides accuracies of 1-50 milliseconds, depending on the characteristics of the synchronization source and network paths. The configuration file fro the NTP daemon is named ntp.conf and contains a list of reference clocks that it can synchronise too. The command ‘server’ specifies the reference clock, any characters after the '#' symbol are comments, example: server time-a.nist.gov # Public NTP server: NIST driftfile /var/lib/ntp/ntp.drift The drift file command identifies the location where the drift is recorded (sometimes referred to as a ‘frequency error). This value can be offset by NTP to ensure of increased accuracy. When configured, NTP can be controlled using the commands 'ntpd start’ ‘ntpd stop’ ‘ ntpq –p’ (displays status) NTP can also authenticate timing resources Note: It is strongly recommends that you configure a time server with a hardware source rather than from the internet where there is no authentication. Authentication codes are specified in the 'ntp.keys' file. Specialist NTP servers are available that can receive transmissions from either GPS or national time reference broadcasts. They are relatively cheap and the signal is authenticated providing a secure time reference. Authentication allows passwords to be specified by the NTP server and its clients. NTP passwords or keys are stored in the ntp.keys file in the following format: number M (The M stands for MD5 encryption), password: 1 M mypassword 3 M my2ndpassword 5 M my3rdpassword Authentication for NTP has been developed to prevent malicious tampering with system synchronisation just as firewalls have been developed to protect networks from attack but as with any system of security it only works if it is utilised.

A Review of Linux Web Development Tools

A Review of Linux Web Development Tools

Author: Christophe

Vim and Emacs

Vim and Emacs are not dedicated development tools, but still, they offer a fair number of features for editing HTML and, in fact, any language you may use for web development. They both support syntax highlighting (HTML, PHP, Python, Perl, CSS and many others) and offer support for editing files on remote machines. Both programs are very versatile and can be extensively customized because they support numerous scripts and extensions to extend their functionality. However, both programs are complex tools and present a very steep learning curve.

OOo Web (Open Office web)

It's possible to write a very simple web page without knowing any HTML at all using the Open Office own web creation tool. This would be a very basic page indeed, because it does not support CSS or forms, for example. I would not recommend using this tool for a complete web site because the code it produces is weird and unnecessarily complicated so it could present a nightmare in the future to edit and transform a large project which was initially created with Open Office web. But for a very quick page, why not ?

SeaMonkey Composer (ex Netscape Composer, ex Mozilla composer)

The Open Source SeaMonkey Composer is based on the venerable Netscape composer, so it's now incorporated into the SeaMonkey suite. It is a fairly simple WYSIWYG editor which generates clean code - unlike many commercial WYSIWYG editors. Unfortunately, it's not very powerful and it only partially supports CSS. SeaMonkey Composer is a suitable tool for complete web design beginners who want to create a very simple website.

Nvu

Available on Linux, Mac and Windows, Open-Source and Linspire sponsored Nvu is based on the Mozilla composer so it shares a relatively similar interface. However, it is a much more advanced tool now, while trying to maintain a non-scary approach for new-comers in web design. The documentation is good and the community active, so, if you have questions or problems, help is not far away! While SeaMonkey Composer lacks many features in WYSIWYG mode, with NVU you can almost create a complete website staying in pure WYSIWYG mode. Still, if you want to add some code manually, it's possible to jump in a second between WYSIWYG Editing Mode and HTML, using tabs. Logically, the preview mode also uses the gecko engine (Mozilla, Firefox) to render web pages. While the code is clean, it will still be necessary to test your web pages against less-compliant web browsers, such as Internet Explorer 6, for example. It's got an easy-to-use, built-in FTP client to quickly upload files to your webspace. Support for forms, tables, and templates is very good but CSS support isn't perfect and it doesn't currently support server-side language like PHP. In conclusion, for the moment, Nvu rests somewhere between tools like Frontpage (Nvu produces much better code) and Dreamweaver (yes, there is huge gap !) : it is a good web development tool, aimed at beginners or intermediate users but it will need more refinement and support for server-side language if it wants to approach the very best web editors available on Windows, for example.

Bluefish

Bluefish is a powerful and lightweight open-source editor targeted towards programmers and webdesigners, with many options to write web sites, scripts and programming code. Browser integration is good and it's got very good support for HTML, CSS, XML, PHP, Pearl, C, JavaScript and even ... Pascal or Octave/MATLAB ! As the developers say on their web page, it's "a what you see is what you need" interface, so it's not a tool suitable for complete beginners in web design (and it was never meant to be !). One important feature missing is FTP integration. Otherwise, it is by far my favorite editor !

Quanta Plus

Quanta Plus is a user-friendly HTML editor and web development tool designed primarly for the K Desktop Environment (although it can run on almost any environment). Unlike Bluefish, Quanta is capable of both WYSIWYG designing and handcoding. It supports a huge number of languages, and its syntax checking and highlighting are excellent. It has code folding and current line highlighting. Features also included are : templates, document structure management, project management, plug-in support, DTD support, etc, integrated FTP client and preview function to let you see the results of your work while you're working. There is also a commercial variant called Quanta Gold, available on Linux, Mac OS X and Windows, with more features. For Gnome users, the KDE interface of Quanta Plus will look a bit out of place, but overall that’s quite minor (note : this is not the case with Quanta Gold, because it's based on QT).

Quanta Plus is free; Quanta Gold costs US $49.95.

Screem

Screem is an open source web development environment written for use with the GNOME desktop environment (it can also be used on other windows managers, however). It does not provide a WYSIWYG display of pages so it's more aimed at advanced users. As it's a very young project, it still lacks many important features : it's usable but incomplete.

Amaya

Amaya is the W3C's -the international consortium which helps develop standards for the World Wide Web - browser and web editor. Although it's theoretically a WYSIWYG package, the interface is rather confusing and not very well designed.

Dreamweaver

There is no native version of Dreamweaver on Linux, on which it is officially not supported. However, Dreamweaver 4 and Dreamweaver MX run well using Wine or Cross-over office, although the latest Dreamweaver CS3 won't work at all. Dreamweaver is the now ultra-dominant web design package available on Windows and Mac OS : it's excellent and very expensive.

Linux Bats in the Major Leagues in Alaska’s Historic Gold Camps

Linux Bats in the Major Leagues in Alaska’s Historic Gold Camps

Author: Hsiao Lin

Linux Gold Corp. (OTCBB:LNXGF) has stepped up to the plate as it further expands its presence in Alaska’s historic gold camps. The company has recently acquired an option to purchase a 100% interest in 26 mining claims close to the historic Ester Dome mining camp near Fairbanks, Alaska for US$10.3 million in cash and shares over a two-year period. As per its October 18th press release, “on September 9, 2007, a major gold/silver discovery was located on the claims, with a potential strike length of 6,500’, width of 100’ and minimum depth of 100’ of high grade gold and silver values based on the sampling and trenching program completed this year. The area has been re-sampled and results are pending.” Placer gold has been mined around Ester Creek and its drainage for decades.

This latest acquisition adds considerable lustre to Linux’s position in Alaska, as it also owns the Granite Mountain gold-polymetallic-platinum Project– located approximately 80 miles east of Nome, on the eastern part of Alaska's Seward Peninsula. The company staked a 37 square mile area at the ‘epicentre’ of some of the world’s greatest deposits– surrounded by Teck Cominco’s Red Dog, (the world's largest zinc deposit) located 180 miles north, Nova Gold’s Rock Creek and Big Hurrah gold mines 75 miles west, their Khotol Silver project 60 miles east, and finally, Northern Dynasty’s massive gold-copper-molybdenum porphyry deposit (the Pebble Project) to the southeast. Red Dog is has over US$20 billion worth of zinc reserves and is producing 500,000 tons of ore annually. Indicated deposits for Rock Creek and Big Hurrah total 670,000 ounces of gold with an estimated Inferred Resource of 100,000 ounces of gold. Northern Dynasty has an inferred mineral resource of approximately 28 million ounces gold and 16.4 billion pounds of copper – certainly one of the world’s finest mineral deposits.

In early 2005, Linux acquired a 100% interest in the property by staking 148 State of Alaska 160-acre mining claims at several locations near Granite Mountain. Work done in the 1960s suggests that the property deserves additional exploration. To date, mapping and geochemical sampling has enabled the company to outline a two-mile mineralized zone with favorable discovery potential. The company’s consulting geologist for the project, Robert B. Murray, is currently completing a NI 43-101 report on the property. In September 2006, a drilling program on the property was completed, testing four separate mineralized zones. Further exploration work to confirm gold and silver values on the property is planned pending additional financing.

The USGS’ fact sheet entitled Regional Geologic, Geochemical, Geophysical, and Mineral Deposit Data for Economic Development in Alaska in the 21st Century confirms the immense base-metal resources of the Seward Peninsula: “Since the gold rush of the late 19th century, it has been recognized that the mineral endowment of the Seward Peninsula, Alaska, is considerable. The well-known placer gold operations have had significant historic production and continue operating to this day. Lode gold production has also occurred. The potential for base-metal deposits (Pb, Zn, Cu) has attracted exploration to the peninsula for decades, but the extent of that resource is unknown. Scattered across the Seward Peninsula, in an area 150 x 200 km, are numerous prospects and occurrences of stratiform massive sulfides.”

Linux also owns a 50% interest in 30 mineral claims known as the Fish Creek Prospect, located in the Fairbanks Mining Division in Alaska. The claims are located only six miles from Kinross’ Fort Knox mill. Linux has a 50/50 joint-venture with Teryl Resources Corp. (TSX.V:TRC) in the Fish Creek claims, in which Linux will spend US$500,000 on the project over three years. Linux Gold Corp. retains a 5% net smelter return or may convert into a 25% working interest. The Fish Creek claims are part of Teryl’s Alaskan holdings, which also include the Gil Project, the Stepovich claims, and the West Ridge property – all in the Fairbanks Mining District. Teryl is one of the main landowners in the district, with holdings contiguous to Kinross’ Fort Knox Project. According to Kinross’ Fort Knox Mine technical report, “the Fairbanks mining district is a celebrated placer gold camp with production in excess of 8.0 million ounces of gold since 1902. Although a significant mining district in terms of total production, it had only limited lode production until the discovery and development of the Fort Knox deposit in the late 1990s.” Fort Knox is the largest producing gold mine in Alaska, with a 4,000,000 oz Au ore reserve.

Linux and Teryl share something else – their president, CEO and chairman of the board, John Robertson, who brings an extensive business, mining and marketing background to both companies.

Management has diligently set about acquiring strategic properties near some of the world’s major producers in an area known for its world-class reserves and its mining-friendly political environment. This approach has yielded some great results so far, given the fact that it has been able to forge close ties with Kinross at Fish Creek.

The company is remarkably well-diversified in terms of its property portfolio, with projects near major former and current producers in Alaska, Arizona, China and Canada. Its accessible price point and Bulletin Board status make it especially attractive to American investors who wish to position themselves early on in the drilling stage in order to maximize their chances of seeing major-league near- and mid-term appreciation. With some good drill results we could well see Linux hit a grand slam.

Linux Php Sales Management System Integration With Microsoft Great Plains Overview

Linux Php Sales Management System Integration With Microsoft Great Plains Overview

Author: Andrew Karasev

Microsoft Dynamics GP is Microsoft Windows and MS SQL Server application, it is heavily integrated with Microsoft Sharepoint and MS Office stack of products. If your Sales Processing system is based in Linux Redhat and is MySQL & PHP application, then you should know the answers on the connection technology to Microsoft Great Plains. In this small article we assume that you have PHP and MySQL developers in IT staff and all you need to do is to get some help in building the bridge to GP accounting backoffice

1. GP Sales Order Processing Module. If you originate your Sales Orders in PHP frontend, then all you need to do is transfer shipped sales lines to GP SOP invoice, where you will be aging your AR and potentially deploying such modules as Business Portal based Electronic Document Delivery for emailing invoices to your customers

2. GP Purchase Order Processing Module. Here you typically integrate your vendor invoices, assuming that your business rules require vendor to drop-ship items directly to your customers. This scenario is often considered as typical for eCommerce platforms

3. PHP lookup to Great Plains. There are multiple options available, the most reliable and platform independent call could be realized through XML web service. Other way to consider would be HTTP request/response technology, however it is rather legacy or old-fashioned.

4. Integration Tool. With Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0, you can deploy GP Integration Manager SOP and POP eConnect connector, which should give you reasonable throughput, comparing to traditional IM connectors, where GP workstation was used as OLE server. However you should also consider eConnect direct C# or VB.Net programming to create SOP and POP invoices in real time from your PHP application – you should consider the best technological scenario on how to call .Net application with parameters from PHP

5. Emailing scenarios: Great Plains Electronic Document Delivery module is part of GP Business Portal and it does excellent job in scheduling SOP invoices deliveries. However if you plan to purchase and implement GP Business Ready Standard, BP is not available. Here you have to consider Microsoft Dexterity customization, which should allow you to build custom screen where you select invoices for emailing and it should also deploy SMTP client to send out invoices. Invoices should preferably be printed in PDF in custom GP ReportWriter SOP Blank Invoice forms

6. Cross Platform Reporting. MS SQL Server should be considered as the center for reporting, it allows you to create Linked Server connectors. ODBC is way to make a link back to MySQL
